'09 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Tach & Speedometer Cut Out - The Fix
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In a previous video we had a look at a customers 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had a customer complaint of the tach and speedo dropping out. We quickly discovered that the CAN B data bus was having some issues and we narrowed it down to the front control module and some corrosion. Now it is time to get it fixed.
-Enjoy!

A truly humble intelligent professional man. The man who knows his profession but is willing to say, well I have done all I can do. Let’s call Keith as I believe he has the ability to solve this final issue. A true team effort and because Eric, lead the team to a used module, proved it was the repair needed. Then brainstormed with Keith to give the customer an economically repaired vehicle. Eric your skills, integrity and knowledge of contacts abilities is what sets you apart from the rest. Great job! Just been watching you 9 years back giving great advice on how to apply silicon spray to door seals to stop you getting frozen out of your vehicle. 9 years on and you are still making helpful and interesting videos. Bravo and thank you!
This is the beautiful thing about why Eric is a professional, because he keeps good company and has great resources to solve real problems without thousands of dollars in expensive parts that are not needed or in this case not available.
Eric’O…Great Job!! You sure went the extra mile to make this repair! Most shops would have just said “Parts not available, I can’t help you”.

Eric fellow trouble shooter here. Not cars for living but appliances. You have a gift for trouble shooting but you and everyone else knows that. You have the rare ability to convey your knowledge. I always watch and i encourage anyone who fixes ANYTHING to watch your system, your procedure. The gentleman who i approached at 17ish and asked will you teach me to do this. He looked me in face and said NOPE. The next thing he said changed my life. “I will teach you to trouble shoot. “Had no idea what he meant. I’m about to turn 55 the age of my turned out to be my father in law. What happened that day has allowed me to make a living for almost 40 years. I really appreciate you because I have never come across anyone until i found you that was such a great confident teacher since losing him. I hope everyone sees past the wrench turning and sees the life changing thing you do here.
No one else would take the time to do what was required to get this heap back on the road. You are a good man, Eric.
Eric, You are way ahead of most techs. Too many only know how to swap out parts. Keep up the good work.
Great job Eric. You saved the owner a lot of money.

It's amazing how far we have come in automotive technology over the years. I started in car repair back in 1968 and back then cars were so easy to fix and you didn't need a half million dollars in tools to get the job done.

Sadly, the technology is creating early junk. Writing off perfectly sound bodied vehicles because an obsolete module corrodes or lets its smoke out. Perhaps one should get into the junkyard business now, and reap the benefits of the need for back flashing modules to differing vin's. Another excellent diagnostic win for SMA and the customer. Thanks Mr. O, never cease to amaze....."Enhance, enhance!" Shout out to L1 too.

For some modules or some functions on some modules, you could design your own microcontroller with an Arduino or something like that for those who know how to do that kind of stuff. That's how 2015s will be at car shows well into the future.
How many shops out of every 100 could successfully do a job like this? I'll bet less than 5. Mr. "O" you are exceptional!!
The biggest problem with that Jeep, was the manufacturers greed and despicable practices in making it impossible to repair. Luckily there are good people like Eric and Keith out there making it possible to keep these vehicles out on the road past the manufacturers planed obsolescence date.

@@stevebell4906 That is why legislation is important that makes it possible for anyone to download the software or buy the manuals to repair their junk. These companies shouldn't be able to prevent you from repairing your vehicle by making the tools you need unavailable. It costs you money and it adds to waste. What might have been repairable in your home garage gets junked because the dealer wants $2K to fix it.
Great job Sir! Customers there are lucky to have someone that will go the extra mile to make things right.

I'm the first to agree that electronics are great but occasionally feel we have just about screw ourselves into a corner. I do long for the old mechanical stuff days. Likely I'm a barnicle past my best use date. Keep up the good diagnosis. You are great.
This type of repair may not be in your wheelhouse but you got it. Good job, mr. O!
It would be interesting to know the year and the model of vehicles that have the problem of parts no longer being made. There are people out there who would buy a 2015 not knowing you can’t buy certain parts for it. If mechanics such as yourself and Ivan would start listing them perhaps some young people would not be taken advantage of.

I’m glad I live 1 1/2 hrs from your shop. If I ever need electronics look at on a vehicle--I will be calling for an appointment.
Eric, way to see it through to the end! You found the crusty pin issue, fixed the half that you could, and got the VIN issue taken care of (even if you did need extra help). Way to get 'er done!
If the "only" issue was crusty connectors, another solution could have been to replace the connector on the original module with the one from the replacement module.
@goranekstrom708

@@jimbeaux1109 Connectors are usually molded, therefore sealed, so it would have to have been cracked for 'crust' to come from the inside. I guess since I work with electronics I see that way being easier.

Another impressive diagnosis and repair, Eric! Well done!!!!
Halfway through this video I had a feeling you were going to have to have L1 give you a hand with this one, I'm glad he helped you sort this thing out, and I have a feeling you're right, without guys like Keith you are going to see more vehicles totaled out due to dead electronics. Also, would it help to put some dielectric grease or Fluid Film up in that connector to help prevent this problem from happening again?
Well imagine that...... a car manufacturer that makes parts obsolete after a few years..... I can’t believe they would do that... You would think that they would want you to be able to repair your vehicle and drive it for 500,000 miles at least......LOL.... It’s a good thing that you know a guy..... Great JOB Eric...

Keith is amazing
Gotta love that in order to reprogram modules, you need to go through secret handshakes and expensive subscriptions.... or find the 3rd party software that is likely available to chop shops. All the hoops that people have to jump through for legal substitution has zero payout in stopping theft.

Thanks for helping out a guy who came from the early days of OBII catch up - it’s been a rocket ship ride so far and I’m totally stoked to see, experience and continue to grow. Wonder if it would be easier to repair the connector on the module? Even if it was just a wire jumper from the module to the harness. Or are those modules filled with epoxy?
