09 Alaska Bound: A Mind-Blowing Glacier Hike in McCarthy

The road to McCarthy Alaska is not one that's recommended for RVs to travel, but we said screw it and came anyway. The town, the abandoned mines the hiking and most the most impact Root Glacier make for one helluva side trip off the Richardson Highway.

WOW! I had no idea there'd be so much intrigue on "THE NOTE" HAHA. For those that just have to know it was a fellow RV couple that made the trek down "Alaska's Worst Road" and they were inviting us over for a beer...sadly we didn't get home till late and they were early risers so we weren't able to connect. It happens sometimes where people see our rig and stop by to say hi, but we're not home...so they leave a note. It's always nice to get a hand written note from other travelers. Addressing some of the other questions: Safe Hiking - We were told by the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park service that the glacier is not covered in snow and therefore it is safe to walk on without worry of unexpectedly falling into crevasse. Crampons Not Necessary - We were told by many that Crampons weren't necessary, but if you really want to spend some time on the glacier they are a must and can be rented for $20 at the local outfitters in town. Jason is Crazy - Yes, he is and although it might not have been the smartest thing to do getting that close to the crevasse we all survived...and yes it looked way worse than it really was. If you want to read more details on how to get here, what the roads are like, where to camp, etc read our post: www.gonewiththewynns.com/glacier-hike-mccarthy-alaska

I was *curious* about "the note". And, I was also *curious* about the rental rate for the crampons. And, you addressed both, so Thank You! ["Curiosity" has a nice ring to it, like it could almost be the name of a Catamaran???!!]

Now that's a very cool experience. It's not everyday you get to play on a glacier. I don't have a bucket list, but if I did, that would be on it. Thanks guys.

I loved this one.. you guys are Awsome.. I am still binge watching sorry I am hooked you are so fun and real and your experiences are amazing🤗 I really love you guys along with Cleo and Singa💖💜💖💜💖

Wonderful trip and hike footage. You did a superb job on the video, as usual. I'm amazed that you drove that motorhome out to McCarthy. Some video from the trip would have been interesting. It's sad to see the glacier melting at such a fast rate, but, I guess that's the time we live in, plus, they melt some every summer naturally. The leaning over the edge part was super scary. I probably would've done it, also, but a rope would have made me feel more comfortable. Thanks again, and Happy Trails!

I was glad to hear of the note too. It was just a cool lil' adventure type of moment. Did you ever get in touch with the people that left it later after the trip? And had you guys ever seen the tv series "Edge of Alaska"..about McCarthy...and the whole Neil trying to bring in travelers to that exact Kennecott mines area and the people that live there fought about it all, especially Jeremy...and they had a lil' showdown on that same walking path that you guys were on at one point..trip huh?? Neil owns the saloon, etc in town..I think you went to. I gotta watch more of your stuff later..I found you through looking at McCarthy and Kennecott, and you guys are pretty cool to watch. Let's us kind of feel like we're there even though we can't go...you're giving us a precious lil' glimpse, so I appreciate all the lil' zoom ups and the lil' things, the details...even if you don't think they would be important...sometimes people need or can use, or want the smallest lil' aspect.

Seeing what you were walking on from what I know of glaciers was a possible fall into a deep crevasse some places obvious and even more dangerous the places its not solid underneath your feet. I'm shocked there was no guide and you weren't all roped together...I'm so glad you had a wonderful experience though.

omg i just commented and i feel like im the only way baring negativity too. like wth, no ropes, no axes, probably no ice screws. jumping around without crampons... couldve easily slid into the small creek and be swept in the rivers that run under the glacier. im skeptical whether they even have the experience or know how to RESCUE with a rope lol im more or less shocked and concerned to EVERYONE watching this thinking it is cool.. PLEASE dear god do NOT do this. i would count them lucky. wear crampons. rope in together. dont leap and bound over crevasses or glacier streams. every step you take is a risk and a chance to die. its not funny
