The Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 - 2 February 1943) was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in Southern Russia. Marked by fierce close quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians by air raids, it is often regarded as one of the single largest (nearly 2.2 million personnel) and bloodiest (1.7-2 million wounded, killed or captured) battles in the history of warfare. It was an extremely costly defeat for German forces, and the Army High Command had to withdraw vast military forces from the West to replace their losses. The German offensive to capture Stalingrad began in August 1942, using the German 6th Army and elements of the 4th Panzer Army. The attack was supported by intensive Luftwaffe bombing that reduced much of the city to rubble. The fighting degenerated into house-to-house fighting, and both sides poured reinforcements into the city. By mid-November 1942, the Germans had pushed the Soviet defenders back at great cost into narrow zones along the west bank of the Volga River. On 19 November 1942, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a two-pronged attack targeting the weaker Romanian and Hungarian armies protecting the German 6th Army's flanks. The Axis forces on the flanks were overrun and the 6th Army was cut off and surrounded in the Stalingrad area. Adolf Hitler ordered that the army stay in Stalingrad and make no attempt to break out; instead, attempts were made to supply the army by air and to break the encirclement from the outside. Heavy fighting continued for another two months. By the beginning of February 1943, the Axis forces in Stalingrad had exhausted their ammunition and food. The remaining units of the 6th Army surrendered. The battle lasted five months, one week, and three days.

Until the Red Army beat them and Zhukov released the 4 Fronts👍👏👏 and squeezed them into “der Kessel”, the cauldron. Then they weren’t too hardened and experienced-those got flown out after the 700 nurses.

Have you heard the sound fighting in the battle of Stalingrad? It make the modern battlefield like a child playing in a kinder garden .
Badass looking soldiers even though they were half starved most of the time.
I'm too saddened too watch all of this. Never forget.
The big mistake was to send the Luftwaffe to destroy the city and afterwards they couldn't get in with the Tanks because of the rubbles, fantastic ground for Russian snipers.
Urban warfare is known by the veterans as the most difficult to fight.Every room,corner,roof is a position.

It's depressing that we (the English) murdered our German brothers knowing they were right, just look at the state of the world. In 1941 the Germans had a lot of advantages, well prepared forces, a surprise attack, a bad forward positioning of the Soviet forces, stubborn, repeated counterattacks into the envelopment, few T-34 tanks, an air force that got destroyed in the first few days, no interference on other fronts ... and even then they could only do 800 km and then logistics broke down. By 1942 the Germans lost their best troops, were at the end of those 800 km of bad roads and railroads to start with, with increasing partisan activity because they treated people so badly, the Soviets mobilized troops, the T-34 production was ramping up past the Urals and more and more land-lease was getting in, especially aviation fuel, airplanes, bullets, food etc ... by October the Soviet air force was able to challenge the Germans and their supply was gradually improving while for the Germans the logistics and reinforcements was breaking down. To attempt another 800 km from Rostov to Baku was a near impossible mission by itself - it helped that the Soviets thought of it as a diversionary attack initially but the encirclements did not happen there were no counterattacks into the pincers no large Soviet forces were encircled. The only chance the Germans had in 1942 was to go ONLY for Baku and secure the flank on the Donets river using the plains between the Donets and Don for maneuver, build a new railway southwest and push with all forces to one objective. Even then it was an impossible mission. The moment it was certain to fail it was time to start the slow methodic retreat. There was no point to fight for a city like that, it had no significance, only the oil had any significance.

Es porque los Rusos los superaban en cantidad de soldados , en Artillería y otros armamentos y a medida que la gran batalla se alargaba mes trás mes y un helido y espantoso frío a temperaturas tan bajas como no se hayan sentido por muchos años . También la ración de comida empezó a escasear , las enfermedades fué otro factor que fué diezmando a los soldados , el hambre y el frío congelante . En pleno invierno con ésas temperaturas muy bajas que congelaban , no podían hacer sus necesidades de defecar bajandose los pantalones , porque corrían el peligro de congelarse . La Batalla de Stalingrado fué tan brutal y de terror como sí estuvieran en el infierno , porque se conjugaron otros factores naturales el frío congelante , el hambre , las enfermedades , el intenso bombardeo de la artillería rusa sin cesar y las batallas calle por calle , edificio por edificio , la infantería alemana ya se estaba quedando sin municiones y con ése terrible Clima no tuvieron apoyo aéreo , ya no había comida y tampoco recibieron el apoyo de más tropas para refuerzos La vestimenta y el calzado de los soldados alemanes no fué el más adecuado para ésas temperaturas congelantes .

солдаты получили 10 лет тюрьмы, в 47м вроде особо не отправляли ещё.. пленных сталинграда с 53го стали отправлять, 4600 немцев вроде выжило к тому времени

В разных местах эти сроки разные. Дед их охранял после демобилизации. Дело было на Кубани... А вообще-то надо уточнить.

Репатриация началась уже в 45-м. В 47-м году отправлены в Германию были 65 245 военнопленных. Всего с момента капитуляции Германии было репартировано 1 900 000 человек. В 53-м этот процесс закончился.

Prakash Arun true, but given the situation (I mean that at the beginning phases of Stalingrad) the Wehrmacht had air control and what not. So I think that yes while there was a high rate of fire and could definitely reveal their positions, they perhaps at this time would still have proper support. Good point though

In the spring of 1942, the German command prepared a new offensive plan on the Eastern Front - the Blau plan, for the occupation of the Soviet Caucasus and the steppe in the Don River region, access to the industrial cities of the giants Stalingrad and Voronezh. Together with the Germans, the armies of Romania, Italy, Hungary, Croatian and Slovak divisions attacked. 6 German field army, 4 tank German army attacked Stalingrad, 17 German army, 1 tank German army and individual corps attacked in the Caucasus direction, 2 Hungarian fascist army and German reinforcement tank divisions attacked Voronezh. In May 1942, the Soviet troops decided to launch a counter-offensive on the Southwestern Front. Having launched a counteroffensive, the Soviet troops broke through the German defenses and advanced 60 km towards the city of Kharkov. At this very time, the Germans launched flank attacks according to Blau's plan, and in the course of several days surrounded the troops of the South-Western Front, only part of the Soviet troops escaped the encirclement. That statistic has a lot to do with the life expectancy of Russian men being low at around 50 years. Getting blind drunk on cheap vodka and passing out in -30C temperatures is decidedly bad for one's health.

Nope in Syria, they almost playing hide and seek with sniper and artillery plus air support. But in Stalingrad hand to hand combat is daily basic.

The chance of German victory at the entire Kuban region was more than 80%. Something went terribly wrong. German flanks were manned by the Axis allied, only 10% of battle quality of Germans. The biggest mistake of all the root cause was to release the precious mechanized forces to the Caucasus region. They failed to gain the main objectives of Baku oil and Astrakhan. They cost the German time and resources but gain nothing, and eventually jeopardized the entire 6th Army at Stalingrad.
