I'm a Blue and while our success over the last decade has been beyond belief, and something I wish so many old fans no longer with us could have shared, the late 60s/early 70s will always be my favourite era. I was on the Kippax for this game as a 13 year old and also at OT that same year for our 4-1 win, something I never thought I would see again until our 6-1 surpassed it! The Kippax and Maine Road will always be my spiritual football home. Wonder how many others feel the same?

Hi John, well I'm a Red from Whalley Range, bit younger than you - lived almost exactly half way between Utd and City. Had loads of mates who were/are Blues and for me too, Maine Rd will always be City's spiritual home. Went to dozens of games there; derbies, City games, semi-finals, even a B International. There seemed to be a testimonial every season too in the 70's and 80's! And like you, I enjoyed (United's) Premier League success, but wouldn't swap my days following them in the 70's and 80's for those of the 90's and the noughties. Best of times!

City, united, leeds, liverpool,Everton, arsenal, chelsea, spurs, derby were all title contenders around this time, even the not so fashionable clubs had great stars also. Early 70s was magic for english football

Well said👍and I my first Team was Man U,(both my older Brothers were Utd) but then I switched to Spurs(because they were the local Team) But this was "The Beautiful Game" as a certain Legend once described it as! Today's presentation just doesn't do it for me!

Fantastic game, just what "derby" clashes should be all about. End-to-end action, drama, thrills and plenty of goals. I gather 63,000 or thereabouts were present at this game (with no segregation), the atmosphere must have been electric, & what a treat both sides laid on for the fans

I'm a Spurs fan but it doesn't matter who you follow because this is the best highlights package of a game you'll ever see

I remember watching this match at my uncle's place on a Sunday. It was the first time I'd seen colour television. What stands out now is what proper footballs were like and shirts without all the crap on them of today. Bell played in the wrong era. He'd have been appreciated far more in modern times. Had everything.

Yes indeed,the effin Ball is ridiculous now..All it has done has allowed the game to appear so much faster(so it must be better!!) No football is not just about Speed(which is a facet that certainly helps) but is meant to be about Skill,being able to tackle hard,but well &being able to handle the opposition doing the same.. As the saying goes" Those were the days!"

a fantastic match - this is everything i miss about modern football. both teams filled with character, personalities and no little skill. terrific atmosphere - listen to the ovation both teams get at the final whistle. gerald sinstadts commentary does it all justice - absolutely wonderful.

Totally agree with you. I'm a Spanish criminal lawyer. I lived in London. I love your country, your history (I am able to say all Prime Minister in the last century) and your football. In those times you can remember the line-up of your favourite team, and hardly ever changed. The Conservatives have been in government for most of the last 50 years and have allowed massive immigration over the last ten (and were the original drivers of Britain joining the EEC (which I don't think was necessarily a bad thing, though you obviously do).

that was some match great to see the old games again there was some great players on display that day true stars.

This is the epitome, a perfect example of the character, spirit, and atmosphere of British football. The All Manchester derby had drawn the desires of both players and fans, living up to the game's/match expectations.

I was actually at this game, all those years ago! (my first Manchester derby) At 2-3 and the game moving into the latter stages, I decided to make an early exit. Not long onto Claremont Rd. their was an almighty roar from the ground ...3-3 A magnificent game of football indeed

I loved Francis Lee. Didn't give a damn what he did to win a football match. The look he gave Willie Morgan after the penalty, "how did you like that dive son?"...classic. As a few others have said, this was proper football played by talented people with genuine character. Not the sanitised, saccharin flavoured pap played by pampered entitled medically enhanced non-entities put out on show for the benefit of the commercial people we have to endure today.

The vintage years of football, proper players, hard but fair, muddy pitches, hard tackling, no diving, warm beer cold tea,....rickety stadia , but full of atmosphere and life......football in those days had its imperfections and was a bit rough round the edges,....but that's why we loved it and have it it's charm

I’m 51 so didn’t get the chance to see Colin Bell but my dad, who supports West Ham said he was exceptional. He said when City came to Upton Park one time Colin was everywhere and the whole chicken run clapped him off at the end. He was the difference between the two sides - not sure what year it was but I’m guessing late 60’s, early 70’s..

What real English football used to be like.

What a thrill for young McIlroy...set up for a goal at Maine Rd but george Best.

Less than 40 seconds between penalty being awarded and Lee scored from it!

Can’t watch modern football. Can watch this again. When Britain was still Britain.

The feigned innocent look on Lee’s face when he handled the ball for the disallowed goal. The hypocrisy of him accusing another player of diving given his notoriety! A great player though, even he was about three stone overweight.

Francis Lee was the first great diver of English football. Best didn't dive here, Lee went straight into the back of him.

@@peterflynn7083 63-000 to be precise. The north stand was a terrace in those days, a year later in 1972 they put seats in it and the capacity was reduced to 52 -000. Some great memories of my time on the Kippax. That City team should have won the title that season. With 9 games to go we were 6 points clear,in those days it was only 2 points for a win. Only 4 of the last 9 games were won and we ended up 4th on goal difference, only 1 point behind Derby who were champions. Think the signing of Rodney Marsh around April time messed up the rhythm of the team.

Tavy@ that was a great game. Brilliant. Lee was always diving anyway. He did against utd in 1969 december in the fa cup and got a last minute penalty that put utd out. And at then end best knocked the ball out of refs hands in anger. Lee was the biggest cheat i have ever saw in any sport. He would cheat on you just becouse he could. Lee was never respected in football.

@Tavy, that's a bit harsh, Franny Lee was a fantastic player, and was a real thorn in the side of united in those days, he always played well against them, maybe that's why you dislike him so much? Tribal loyalties are definitely clouding your judgement. His hatrick in 1970 at the swamp contained no penalties, if we're talking divers, Ashley Young, remember him? How many penalties have the rags had this season? A ridiculous amount, last night's game proves they can't win a football match without being awarded them. Even last night's league cup semi-final, martial was embarrassing. Great City performance, in honour of the late great Colin Bell. RIP Nijinsky

I love the way Lee looks triumphantly at Willie Morgan by mistake when he dives for a penalty.

This game was a classic ! Two well matched teams & virtually no fouls committed ! It's hard to believe that neither of them were Title Contenders ! In fact United got relegated a few years later !

@ Keith Spencer, your wrong mate, City should have won the league that season, 6 points clear with only a handful of games left, when it was only 2 points for a win. The signing of Rodney marsh, followed by only 4 wins in the last 9 games cost us the title. We finished 4th, only 1 point behind derby, who won the title. Great 70s footage.

That's right Wayne. They were actually five points clear and had played a game more than their rivals I think. Even so, they should have won the league that season. There is no doubt that the Marsh signing upset the balance of the side and they lost a game or two that should not have been lost. Of course it was United who were five points clear at the end of 1971. I always recall Malcolm Allison in his Daily Express column predicting that they would fall away in the new year. Malcolm was certainly right about they lost about seven games on the trot in the new year and eventually finished eighth in the table. Malcom was though wrong to sign Marsh at the time he did. He should have waited until the season ended.

@@anthonyquinn6009 even Marsh himself admits his arrival cost the league title. As Mike Summerbee said a few years later. Wyn Davies was with us then ,a tremendous centre forward who caused all sorts of problems for opposition defences, and was a great foil for Franny, who fed off his knock -ons and flick- ons, most of his 33 goals he scored that way, then the arrival of Marsh changed everything, with all the attacking play going through him, a quick attacking team suddenly became slow and laboured. Marshes signing came at the worse possible time, and certainly was a contributing factor in not winning the title that year.

@@onthekippaxsince75 Indeed, Marsh himself admitted his arrival cost City the Championship in 1972. It was a bad move by Malcolm Allison buying him when he did. In fairness though, Malcolm did more right than wrong things for City. The sale of Davies early the following season was perhaps equally as controversial. Especially as he was sold to United. However, in his book 'Colours Of My Life' Malcolm states that he had to sell a couple of players who were "mixing it up in the dressing room". He states that he was told of this by Francis Lee. Malcolm would not name the players in his book as "they were both still playing". I cannot help but think that Davies was one of the players he was alluding to.

I think there is a no-utd-wins policy on this channel! I have yet to see one!

For those of you watching in black and white city had the better chances and failed to score, the other team fluffed all their shots.

@@dlamiss Yep, I stand corrected. I should have stated that Ramseys biggest mistake was substituting Bobby Charlton whilst in the ascendancy against the West Germans. I still stand in my belief though, that neither Stepney or Bonetti were international class. A pity, because there were some solid and exciting players in the England squad, that were arguably an improvement on the lads of 66, if at all possible. The likes of Labone, Cooper and Franny Lee spring to mind. Apart from our disappointment at losing in the QF, I still look back very fondly on the 1970 World Cup,and some of the great players like Pele, Muller, Riva and Jairzinho to name but a few......who graced that tournament 😁😉👍

And yet he did, I wonder why? Simple, even the best footballers with all the skill in the World will get tackled and lose the ball, or the move goes wrong, they don't like it and will do anything to keep or get it back. Even more basic than that they will win at all costs.
