02 - What is a Transformer & How Does it Work? (Step-Up & Step-Down Transformer Circuits)

View more lessons like this at www.MathTutorDVD.com
In this lesson, we will learn about the circuit element know as the transformer. Transformers use the phenomena of mutual inductance to generate a voltage in a secondary coil when a nearby primary coil is excited by a sinusoidal current.
The primary coil generates a magnetic field which interacts with the secondary coil and generates the secondary voltage. The physical law that explains this is known as Faraday's law from physics.
Transformers are used to increase or decrease a secondary voltage at the expense (tradeoff) of the secondary current.

    This really helped me to understand how the voltage increase causes the current to decrease in a Transformer. I was trying to understand this for a new apprenticeship I got at Power Plant and nobody could explain it to me.

    The following was a question from a physics examination: “Using a diagram, illustrate the structure of a transformer which supplies 12 V when connected to 240 V mains. If this transformer takes 0.55A from the mains when used to light five 12V, 24watt lamps in parallel, find its efficiency.” i) Work out the question (5marks) ii) Identify the probable errors that leaners can make in answering this question (5marks) iii) Develop a marking scheme for the question. Interesting statement you made: The magnetic field of the polarized iron creates the magnetic field which is added to the induced field that causes the polarization of the magnetic domains in the first place. Veritasium made the same statement regarding energy transfer in an electric circuit: energy is transferred by the electrostatic field of the EMF source and the fields of the free electrons which are 'polarized' by the EMF.

    x dot == dx/dt the derivative of x with respect to time. (Think velocity in x direction) x double dot == d²x/dt² == d/dt(dx/dt) the second derivative of x with respect to time (Think acceleration in the x direction) x triple dot == d³x/dt³ == d/dt(d²x/dt²) the third dirivative of x with respect to time (Think jerk in x direction) And so on x w/ n dots = d^n/dt^n(x) the nth derivative of x ALWAYS with respect to time Very similar to prime notation, although the operand of x' myst be specified, x dot is always with respect to time. And in the best notation of all, Leibniz, everything is specified.

    real world question: i plug in a power pack/power supply for a electronic device into the wall socket. Now since it is a transformer the hot and neutral wires in socket are connected and create a circuit. now if the circuit was just a single wire loop it would be a short circuit and heat up and hopefully trip breaker. now the transformer is still a loop of wire and if the supply is not connected to device their would be no load. so is the reason the one side of the transformer does not act like a short circuit because of the impedance of the coil/inductor?

    I have a couple of questions. Since there was no reference made to wire sizes used to wind the transformer. 1) were the input (primary) and output (secondary) assumed to be the same size wire? 2) increasing wire size also increases current flow so would increasing wire size on the output (secondary) help negate current loss while stepping up voltage? I know that also makes the transformer larger as a result. This was a very informative lesson! Thank you for it!🖒I liked and subbed. ;)

    You are correct but we don’t always draw a sine wave for a sinusoidal source. Often times we just draw the plus or minus as a reference and then the phasor associated to that independent voltage or current source. The plus and minus at this point is just simply a reference.

  • @alexanderquilty5705

    @alexanderquilty5705

    Remember that the plus and minus doesn’t always refer to a battery source, it’s just a voltage source. Only when you see the long and short “plates” can you assume that it’s a battery.
