0191 DIY beams for the cabin build on an Alaskan sawmill.

Ойын-сауық

Milling a 21’ long log to be used for beams in the cabin build.
Our Woodland sawmill will only mill 16’ long logs but we needed two 21’ beams so we got out the Alaskan sawmill.
Who are the "Mitchells In Alaska?" Retired brothers, Tony & Perry. as well as Perry's wife Carolyn and their son Tyler and his wife Ginny + 4 dogs and 2 cats.
What are we doing? We are building an off-grid homestead in the Alaskan wilderness that consists of three cabins. We will clear land, saw our own lumber from trees we cut, and build cabins and outbuildings. We have already built a couple of our outhouses and an outdoor shower, etc.
Currently, we're all sharing one tiny cabin while clearing land and milling logs to build 2 more cabins, gardens etc. It's an adventure most would not even attempt & most think we are crazy for doing. An experience of a lifetime & the biggest adventure we've been on. We're learning many new things along the way as well as applying the skills we already have.
Come along on this adventure with us & laugh at our goofs. Connect with us on Facebook at / mitchellsinalaska

Must be a right of passage to hit a nail/screw when first using the Alaskan Mill. Really messes up our chains. Cabin is looking good guys, keep it up!

Saw is 92cc. I don’t know of a 97cc stihl. And get yourself a ripping chain. Will help a bunch. Good video.

We have only used it a couple times. Usually we use the bandsaw mill but this one was too long

Are you using a ripping chain or just a standard crosscut chain on your 92cc saw? A ripping/milling chain usually puts out larger chips of sawdust with a few long stringy pieces, especially on spruce. Ripping chains cut with the grain about 2x as fast as a normal chain. I like your creative solution for milling longer logs.

We were using a standard chain. We resharpened the chain after hitting the screw and it took a little over 5 minutes to make the 21’ cut

@@MitchellsInAlaska 2-3 mins max for a cut like that with a ripping chain. How many more 16'+ beams to cut? Our Lowe's and Home Depot in Wasilla sometimes have them in stock, but AIH should have them for sure, though a bit more expensive.
