I love and adore Orangutans just look at how beautiful she is and attentive😍🥰

Orangutans and gorrilas are great parents. So loving. Their babies are like humans. Mom holds them for months

What we are witnessing is actually a mother rejecting her infant. My guess is that this is a first time mother. She’s treating her infant almost like a toy and not her baby. Primate mother’s tend to keep their babies very close to their chest, this is crucial when establishing their bond. This mother is pushing her infant away and refusing to let him nurse. That’s a huge red flag, infants need to nurse every two hours or they will become dehydrated. Unfortunately for orangutan mothers, their infants nurse very hard and it can be quite painful for the mother. The zoo staff probably had to take the infant and hand raise him until he was able to eat solids.

It does seem kinda young to be weaning but I’m no expert maybe this is normal for orangutans 🤷

It's amazing, but the mother is smiling all the time and has the patience of a saint. How very, very lovely.

The baby is so adorable

What a gentle mommy. I love all the hair these primates have it makes me want to condition it and brush it lol. Orangutans move slow reminds me of Sloths ..well maybe not that slow!

Hard to believe that Riki is bigger than his mother now. He's enormous for a male orangutan that isn't even 7 years old yet.

@@AnabelBatesCorrea I didn't see rejection. Orangutans are very much like humans - aren't you familiar with the concept of a nipple becoming tender and sensitive/sore from nursing? It happens to humans and it can happen to orangutans too. It was very clear that's what was happening the way she was motioning with her fingers to remove his lips from her nipple. It wasn't a rejection of the baby overall. While the video ends too soon to say for sure, it appears that at the end when the baby went for the other breast, that she didn't react the way she did with the other one. Unlike human mothers who will consciously and intentionally just move the baby to the other breast, for whatever reason it seems other ape species allow the baby to just choose themselves, and don't seem to have the thought process to physically move them over to the non-sore nipple. Part of it could be the simple fact that human babies are mostly helpless and have to be carried whereas other ape babies can grip onto mother themselves and are much more mobile. In any case we don't have to wonder because this video is a decade old and this baby grew up to be a healthy, strong, and large adult male.

@@mchevredo you think, as far as apes and monkeys go, having the infant choose and not doing anything to help guide the infant to nurse is sort of a survival test? Like, newborns that are too weak or too dumb to reach the chest to nurse are to simply starve to death? I notice in these various primate videos that mothers don’t guide the infant in any way or lift them up, it’s all on the infant to figure it out. Either primates aren’t smart enough to know a struggling infant needs help nursing or it’s intentional and instinctual to weed out the weak. Any input you have on this would be appreciated.

These babies are so cute and found in such sad conditions, I love to see them become rehabilitated, However, I would still like to see some of Sweet pea and Timor and the other monkey babies I AM so familiar with . Do indeed though love to see these baby orangutans.

Oh no no... baby eats all the time, these little guys are very verbal and will cry and throw a baby fit when they want to eat, So don't worry about the baby being hungry.

I wonder if she instinctually knows when the baby has had enough milk, or if she just stops him when it starts to get uncomfortable?

This baby almost died twice from starvation. She rarely let him nurse. He had to be taken away permanently.

He may also have been teething, though I'm not sure when orangutan babies start teething, causing him to improperly latch. The reason to switch sides then? Babies don't necessarily latch the same way on both sides.

I ask myself...why zoo keepers don't move these babies and mothers to a peacefull place?

Mom needs to move baby to other nipple if that one is sore cause she needs to let baby nurse.

A scary face, cold eyes,...I do not feel affection for the hand she holds her baby.

Removing baby from teat she was in pain . Mama is gorged with milk and the baby’s suckle very hard on her nipples and bad combination very painful. Switching off looks like she knows exactly what’s she was doing.
